Thai massage on the UNESCO list

The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is a registry maintained by UNESCO, whose aim is to identify and disseminate knowledge about selected phenomena in the field of intangible heritage and related cultural spaces. In December 2019, traditional Thai massage was added to this list.

The traditional Thai massage, known as "Nuad Thai," has received true recognition. UNESCO experts have recognized that knowledge of this method should be passed down from generation to generation. In justifying their decision to include traditional Thai massage on the list of world heritage, they also pointed out that "Nuad Thai is seen as an activity on the border of art, science, and traditional Thai healthcare" and that "the massage practitioner helps restore the patient's balance of the body and the flow of energy through energy lines called 'sen'."

When it comes to the origin of Thai massage, there is no single version. Some sources claim that the founder of this healing method was Shivago Komarpaj (JÄ«vaka Kaumārabháč›tya), who, according to legend, was a physician to Buddha around 500 BCE. In the 19th century, all the knowledge gathered about traditional Thai massage was systematized, and the sequence of sequences according to which it should be performed was determined. Qualified Thai massage specialists still use these rules to this day.

The ancient tradition and widespread popularity of Thai massage over the years has led to the emergence of about 80 different variations. The most important among them are:

  • Classic Thai Massage - it uses techniques known from acupressure and passive yoga. It helps relieve tension in muscles, joints, and tendons, as well as supports the functioning of the circulatory and lymphatic systems. It contributes to bringing balance to the body, which promotes relaxation and the regaining of energy and vitality.

  • Oil Massage - special aromatic oils with extracts from various fruits and flowers are used for this massage. It draws on the Ayurvedic philosophy of massage and uses acupressure techniques. The aim of this massage is primarily to strengthen the immune and nervous systems and to eliminate excess water from the body.

  • Back, Shoulder, and Head Massage - various massage techniques used in it effectively eliminate post-traumatic and other spinal pain. It also helps to relieve tension and pressure located in the shoulder and neck areas. It is also helpful in combating recurring headaches and effectively stimulates blood circulation in the scalp, thereby strengthening hair follicles.
